Project Overview

Role

As the Director of Product & Technology at WONDR, I spearheaded the digital transformation of the Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI), an initiative that consolidated their fragmented digital presence into a cohesive and user-centric platform. By merging multiple standalone sites into a unified hub, we enhanced the organization’s ability to promote Irish design and craft while providing an optimized experience for users and stakeholders.

Solution

The DCCI project required a meticulous approach to strategy, design, and technology. It leveraged a collaborative process between WONDR and DCCI to address the organization’s complex digital challenges while creating a scalable solution.

Comprehensive Research and Strategy

  1. Stakeholder Workshops:
    • Facilitated sessions to align organizational objectives with user needs, ensuring the website reflected the aspirations of Irish designers and makers.
    • Defined clear goals for audience engagement, content accessibility, and operational efficiency.
  2. User Research and Personas:
    • Conducted extensive interviews with end-users, designers, and stakeholders to create detailed personas.
    • Mapped user pain points and motivations, enabling the creation of tailored content and intuitive navigation paths.
  3. Competitive Benchmarking:
    • Performed market analysis to position DCCI as a global leader in promoting craft and design.
    • Evaluated peer organizations to identify best practices in content delivery and audience engagement.

User Experience and Design Innovation

  1. Information Architecture (IA):
    • Completely restructured the IA, streamlining access to key sections like education, craft promotion, and maker directories.
    • Designed audience-specific pathways for makers, buyers, and design enthusiasts to ensure an intuitive experience.
  2. Campaign Mode:
    • Developed a unique campaign mode feature within the main site to host high-visibility events like Future Makers and Design Week Ireland.
    • These microsites retained the main website’s branding while offering the flexibility to spotlight specific programs.
  3. Visual Design Excellence:
    • Introduced a modern design language reflecting Ireland’s rich cultural heritage and DCCI’s role in fostering creativity.
    • Incorporated high-impact visuals, video storytelling, and strategic use of white space to emphasize content hierarchy.
  4. Content Optimization:
    • Consolidated redundant pages, streamlined messaging, and highlighted impactful narratives through storytelling techniques.

Technology and Development

  1. Unified Platform:
    • Consolidated multiple standalone sites into a single hub built on WordPress, hosted on WP Engine for scalability and reliability.
    • Implemented modular components within the CMS, allowing for effortless content updates and scalable future additions.
  2. Performance Optimization:
    • Achieved a 99% GTMetrix Performance Score, ensuring fast load times and improved accessibility.
    • Optimized the platform for SEO, boosting discoverability and organic traffic.
  3. Accessibility Compliance:
    • Ensured adherence to WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines), making the platform inclusive and accessible to all users.
  4. Analytics Integration:
    • Implemented Google Analytics and Hotjar to track user behavior, enabling continuous performance improvement.

Collaboration

The success of this project was driven by a collaborative process between WONDR’s team and DCCI. Key areas of teamwork included:

  • Strategic Alignment: Ensuring DCCI’s vision and goals were seamlessly integrated into the digital platform.
  • Content Strategy: Joint efforts in content auditing and curation resulted in a platform that authentically represented Ireland’s vibrant craft and design culture.
  • Iterative Development: Regular design sprints and stakeholder reviews allowed for ongoing improvements and alignment.

Conclusion

The digital transformation of DCCI’s platform represents a landmark project in modernizing how Irish design and craft are promoted globally. By merging multiple websites into a cohesive hub, introducing innovative features like campaign mode, and delivering an engaging, user-first experience, the new platform serves as a cornerstone for DCCI’s mission.
