Role

As the Director of Product & Technology, I spearheaded the design, development, and implementation of the ESB Real-Time Visualization (RTV) Platform, a centralized data hub revolutionizing ESB Generation & Trading's decision-making processes. The platform consolidates operational and financial data from energy assets across Ireland and the UK, providing real-time insights to support strategic decisions.

Challenges

Before the development of the RTV platform, ESB station managers and traders faced significant challenges:

• Fragmented Data Sources: Data was spread across multiple systems, making it time-consuming to gather and analyze.
• Lack of Real-Time Insights: Delays in data access hindered timely decision-making, impacting operational efficiency.
• Inconsistent User Interfaces: The tools available were difficult to navigate and lacked a unified, user-friendly design.

As the project lead, I identified these challenges and drove the creation of a unified solution that would deliver efficiency and clarity to ESB’s operations.

Contribution

1. Strategic Vision and Leadership:
   • Collaborated with ESB stakeholders, including plant managers and traders, to define user, technology, and business requirements.
   • Developed a comprehensive roadmap to ensure alignment with ESB’s operational goals and Net Zero 2040 ambition.
2. Product & UX Design:
   • Led the UX and UI design strategy to create an intuitive, user-centric interface.
   • Introduced digital brand guidelines and prototypes to ensure design consistency and user accessibility.
   • Oversaw the creation of a centralized, visually engaging data visualization hub.
3. Technology Architecture:
   • Championed the development and integration of a first-of-its-kind Data Warehouse (DWH) and ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) process for ESB, enabling seamless aggregation, processing, and storage of vast amounts of operational and financial data. This initiative established a centralized repository that consolidated data from disparate systems across Ireland and the UK, providing the foundation for real-time insights and strategic decision-making.
   • Key innovations included:
   • • ASP.NET Core for Scalable Backend Development: Designed and implemented a robust backend architecture using ASP.NET Core, ensuring scalability, high performance, and reliability to handle the complexity of ESB's operations.
     • Google Charts and Google Maps for Interactive Data Visualization: Delivered an intuitive user interface powered by dynamic visualizations, enabling users to monitor real-time asset performance, geographical data, and key operational metrics.
     • SQL Server for Advanced Data Management and Storage: Architected a SQL Server-based solution to store and manage large volumes of data efficiently, ensuring high availability and quick access for analysis and reporting.
     • Headless API Development: Designed and deployed a headless API architecture to decouple the frontend and backend, enabling seamless data exchange between applications. This approach enhanced flexibility, reduced latency, and supported future integrations across ESB's digital ecosystem.
     • Real-Time API Configuration: Configured APIs to streamline real-time data aggregation and processing, ensuring up-to-the-minute accuracy in operational and financial reports.
   • By combining these technologies with a tailored DWH and ETL pipeline, I provided ESB with a powerful, scalable, and future-proof solution that transformed how data is visualized and utilized, empowering stakeholders with actionable insights and operational agility.

   • Directed cross-functional Agile sprints to accelerate the research, design, and development process.
